Thinking like a kid

Sitting in with the second grade class at Franklin Elementary School, I notice something very weird, the kids actually like to do homework and enjoy it. Some kids even ask for more! This is unheard of in the High School world, where asking for more homework is like asking for more dentist appointments. The thing I have found out is that doing simple calculations is a challenge for the young kids; for example four plus six takes them a while to process as where older kids just know it by heart. Most of the children use there hands to count, others use pieces of blocks or any other item to count there way to the answer.  As it may be cold from the ac at Franklin, the high school is a different story, with us getting out early Thursday and now Friday because of heat ratings. In every classroom you can see the students wave there folders back and forth just to feel a circulation of air on there hot faces. But the classroom isn’t the hottest area; the lunch room is blazing hot because of all the food cooking and many students packed in. This kind of weather is abnormal for this time of year; most of us are not used to the scorching heat of summer in the fall.
